When we mention Sheer Drapery to a client, often the image of grandma’s old lace curtains pop into mind – gone are those days! Sheer Drapery has “grown up” and today there is an amazing array of beautiful and elegant sheer fabrics available. There are linens, textures and patterned sheer fabrics that can be used in drapery that will blend into and enhance any style of home, be it traditional or ultra-modern. Sheer fabrics can be simply gathered on a drapery rod; traditionally pinch pleated or made using a more modern “organized” ripplefold treatment – all will add softness and mood to any space.
Most sheer fabrics are available in wide widths – the width becomes the full height of the drapery, allowing the drapes to be seamless. Sheer fabrics are generally used with triple-fullness to obtain the most attractive and luxurious look. You can choose the transparency of a sheer fabric to provide the level of privacy that you require. A more light filtering fabric in a Living Room or Dining room will provide you with soft ambient lighting, a sheer fabric with a heavier texture will offer the privacy that you want in a Bathroom or Bedroom.
Carefully choose the size of your drapery rod to coordinate with the type of sheer fabric that you want to use. If you are using a very gauzy, light sheer, it is best to use a smaller diameter drapery rod so that the drape isn’t over-powered by the hardware. A more heavily textured or patterned sheer fabric can be used with a larger diameter drapery rod, balancing the visual weight of the treatment. There are many choices of metal or wood drapery rods, an endless choice of finishes and colours – many with beautiful decorative finials and brackets to complete the look.
