Window coverings have more than a purely decorative function. They allow you to control the amount of light that enters your home. They help to keep your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter. They protect your privacy, and they can also create an acoustic barrier, deadening outside sounds.
You can spend a lot of money on your window coverings and like anything else, they need a little TLC to keep them looking their best for as long as possible.
Window coverings can be dust magnets. If drapes and blinds aren’t cleaned from time to time, you’ll be amazed by the amount of dust, dirt, grime, and pet dander that will accumulate on them.
No matter what your window coverings are made of, as a general rule they should be dusted at least once a month. Periodically, they need a more thorough cleaning.
Once a month – clean curtains with a vacuum cleaner and upholstery brush, a feather duster, or a static duster.
Once a year – washing curtains is hard on them so you don’t want to do it more often than necessary. That’s why it’s a good idea to dust them regularly so they don’t get so dirty you have no choice but to throw them in the washing machine. If curtains are machine washable, put them in the washing machine on the Delicate cycle. If they are very delicate, it might be a good idea to wash them in a mesh bag. Tumble dry with low or no heat. If they say “Dry Clean Only,” ask friends and family if they can recommend a cleaner who does a good job on drapes.
Vertical and Horizontal Blinds
Once a month – close the blinds and vacuum them with an upholstery brush on the vacuum cleaner. Remove stains on fabric blinds with a sponge soaked in warm water and dishwashing detergent. For stubborn stains, use upholstery cleaning solution.
Surface grime can be removed from metal blinds with a damp cloth. Be careful not to transfer the dirt onto the cords and ladder.
Roman blinds should be vacuumed periodically to remove dust. Blinds in kitchens often get splattered with food and dish water. They can be spot cleaned with fabric cleaner. If cloth Roman blinds get really dirty, you can leave them hanging and steam clean them, or you can remove all of the hardware and put them in the washing machine. Wood or bamboo blinds can be cleaned with special wood blind cleaner.
